Psychiatry is the branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various abnormalities related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. This subject is included in the course of MBBS as a allied subject of the Medicine. The purpose of this subject is to enable a student to understand the concept of psychiatric disorders and their classification and to apply this knowledge to diagnose and treat common psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, acute manic episode, depression, anxiety disorders including phobias and OCD, conversion and dissociative disorders sexual disorder, de-addiction. “To Study the abnormal is the best way of understanding the normal”

Objectives of the department

  • To help undergraduate medical students acquire basic knowledge & skills pertaining to diagnosis & treatment of common mental disorders, handling of psychiatric emergencies & referral to a specialist.
  • To direct postgraduate students towards the acquisition of in-depth knowledge, skills & attitudes required for the competent & ethical practice of evidence-based psychiatry in a variety of service settings.
  • To train postgraduate residents in educational technology & research methodology.
  • To help students acquire an optimal attitude towards mental health & mental illness.
  • To promote faculty activities relevant to continuing professional development.

TEACHING/TRAINING ACTIVITIES
The curriculum has been prepared in pursuance of MCI regulations and commences in the 3rd semester of the MBBS program as allied subject of Medicine and continues up to 9th semester. The students are posted in batches for clinical training to learn clinical skills, for the duration prescribed by the MCI, and encouraged to practice these skills on patients under direct guidance of faculty. Lectures, small group discussion and problem based tutorial are also organized for development of comprehension, analysis and communication skills. Students are also encouraged to participate in regular bedside clinic and integrated seminar; case presentation skill sessions are also organized for undergraduate students.
