Biochemistry commonly refers as chemical language of life, behaves as an integral part of clinical component in the disciplines of medicine, health bioengineering and technology. It is the most rapidly advancing science in medicine having wider impact on human health and disease. Most of the diseases are manifestation of abnormalities of molecules, chemical reactions or biochemical processes. Training in biochemistry covers comprehensive understanding of the chemical process associated with living cells, at the molecular level in normal and altered homeostatic conditions. Hence, the major objective of teaching learning biochemistry is the complete.
Vision:
To provide facilities at par with excellence to acquire skills in identifying the link between biological and human resources and transform it to enhance the quality of life and recognition as nodal diagnostic center in Gujarat.
Mission:
To give a competency based knowledge in concepts, general principles of biochemistry and provide opportunities to get hands on experience and skills in clinical biochemistry, bioinformatics and molecular biology for diagnostic and therauptic tools in medicine.
TEACHING/TRAINING ACTIVITIES
The curriculum of biochemistry is developed as per recommendations of MCI and spreads over 150 teaching days and will be delivered in minimum of 240 teaching hours. The subject will be taught using Interactive lectures and practical skills, integrated teachings, tutorials, case studies, symposium and integrated seminars as per teaching schedule to promote their analytical and comprehension skills. The overall performance of the department is recorded in the feedback form by students with their ideas regarding the learning modules and incorporated to upgrade in every upcoming batch.
FUTURE PLAN
It is proposed to establish most advanced and upgrade diagnostic & research facilities in the field of genomics and proteomics, neurobiochemistry. It is also proposed to create collaborative research environment with other medical institutes of national and International repute. The biochemistry curriculum has been structured to meet the different needs of the medical students.
Goals
  • Understand the molecular basis of biochemical processes in health and disease.
  • Adopt continuous education and training in applied biochemistry.
Medical Biochemistry
This course provides an overview of the basic principles of biochemical events in living systems in terms of metabolism in normal and diseased states. It will prepare the students for other pre-clinical and clinical subjects. The topics taught include an overview of cellular constituents, major metabolic pathways, glucose homeostasis, blood biochemistry, gene information, hormonal action, prostaglandin and vitamins. Methods of teaching include lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory sessions.
Medical Genetics
This course provides an overview of inheritance and specific traits linked to diseases. It will describe the molecular basis of variation in living organisms and link genetic knowledge to the understanding of many diseases. The topics taught will include, review of organization of the human genome, transcription and translation of genes, clinical cytogenesis, patterns of inheritance, mutations, genetic diagnosis and a number of diseases as models for molecular diseases.
FACILITIES AND SERVICES
The department has been provided with teaching facilities of
  • Practical laboratory for UG students
  • Research Lab
  • Department library
  • Demonstration Rooms
  • Audiovisual teaching facilities e.g. OHP, LCD, Illustrations in biochemistry
  • provides diagnostic services to OPD and IPD patients in hospital round the clock as a part of central laboratory functioning 24×7, and committed to extend whole gamute of diagnostic and therapeutic services for upgrading the standards of patient care in Gujarat and adjoining states.
  • Quality Control: To attain quality service of reported laboratory investigations, we propose to participate in External Quality Assessment Scheme (EQAS), run by the Department of Clinical Biochemistry.
